Route Characteristics
The tour 2016 will start close to the highest mountain in Germany, the Zugspitze. During the four days of cycling we will discover the beautiful bavarian countryside. Scenic villages like Garmisch-Partenkirchen, Füssen, Oberstdorf, Lindau or Mersburg are pleasant spots for a short rest or even a night break. Beautiful lakes like the Eibsee, the Forggensee and last but not least the largest german lake, the Lake of Constance, are appreciated contrasts to the predominant mountain scenery. You may also enjoy world-class monuments like the Castle Neuschwanstein and Hohenschwangau, the monastry of Kloster Ettal, the peninsula of Lindau or the stone-age lake dwellings in Uhldingen.
Route in Detail
Day 1: Eibsee - Füssen
Starting at the base of the highest german mountain, the Zugspitze, at the lake Eibsee, we are cycling through the famous city of Garmisch-Partenkirchen, well-known for the New Year Ski Jumping competition. Lateron we are passing Oberammergau, which is known for its once-a-decade Passion Play. Cycling around the Ammer mountains we are heading towards Füssen, the end of the first stage. Neuschwanstein Castle , the picturesque castle of king Ludwig II of Bavaria, is easy to see in the mountains and worth a short detour.
Day 2: Füssen - Oberstdorf
From Füssen we are cycling towards the lovely city of Nesselwang. We will touch the Austrian border on our way to Bad Hindelang and Sonthofen. The end of this stage is the city of Oberstdorf in the Allgäu region of the Bavarian Alps, one of the highest market towns in Germany.
Day 3: Oberstdorf - Wangen
Leaving Oberstdorf to the north we will reach Immenstadt and pass along the Großer Alpsee. Later on we leave the mountain area and reach the hilly area of the Allgäu. The far end of this day is the city of Wangen in the county of Baden-Württemberg.
Day 4: Wangen - Uhldingen
On the last day we will first cycle again southwards to the Lake of Constance. We will reach the lake at the city of Lindau, the only bavarian city at the lake. Lindau is well-known for its pictureque old town on a peninsula. It's worth to stop at least for a coffee. The rest of the day we will cycle all the way along the famous cycling route at the lake. We will see the cities of Friedrichshafen as well as the beautiful Mersburg, which is again worth a stop. Finally we will reach the end of the tour in Uhldingen, which is well-known for its stone-age lake dwellings (Pfahlbauten) and the famous church of Birnau.
