General information

Tour overview

This guided cycling tour, featuring an international participant field, takes us through the challenging French Alps from Geneva to Nice on the Mediterranean coast. Over the course of seven days, we conquer the 640 km route, crossing seven notable mountain passes: Col de Méraillet (1,605 m), Cormet de Roselend (1,967 m), Col de l'Iseran (2,764 m; the highest drivable mountain pass in the Alps), Col du Galibier (2,642 m), Col de Vars (2,108 m), Col de la Cayolle (2.326 m) and Col de la Couillole (1,678 m). After covering over 13,500 meters in elevation, we successfully conquer this week-long challenge!

In Saint Michel de Maurienne, we will stay at the same stage location where this year's Tour de France begins its fifth stage. From there, we follow the Tour de France route (in its fourth stage) over the infamous Col du Galibier. On our last day, we ride partially the 20th stage (second to last) of this year's Tour de France. Throughout our tour, we'll recognize many routes and passes from past Tour de France races.

After the tour, a shuttle is available to take us back to our starting point at Lake Geneva.

Throughout the journey, we'll stay in carefully selected three- to four-star hotels, including dinner and breakfast. Your luggage will be transported between hotels in our support vehicle, and if any issues arise with your bike, we'll pick you up with the support vehicle.

Each morning before departure, you have the opportunity to stock up on provisions such as fruits, isotonic drinks, and energy bars for the day.

This cycling tour is designed specifically for ambitious, experienced, and well-prepared road cyclists! Riding at high altitudes can be as challenging as conquering multiple demanding mountain passes over several days!

We'll travel in several groups based on individual performance levels during the daily stages. Due to the challenging route, only one route option is available each day, exclusively on paved roads.

Tour Highlights:
- Selected *** / **** hotels in Albertville, Val d'Isere, Saint Michel de Maurienne, Mont-Dauphin, and Barcelonette, including breakfast and dinner
- Optional /* hotels in Geneva and Nice, including breakfast, can be additionally booked
- Col de Méraillet (1,605 m), Cormet de Roselend (1,967 m), Col de l'Iseran (2,764 m), Col du Galibier (2,642 m), Col de Vars (2,108 m), and Col de la Couillole (1,678 m)
- Optional return transport from Nice to Geneva can be additionally booked
- Many new friends from around the world and unforgettable moments

If a bicycle is needed on-site, it's possible to directly order a rental bike through GBI. Two different bike types are available (Cannondale Aluminum sports bike, Giant Carbon TCR Advanced). Due to the topography, we do not offer e-bikes on this tour.

Here you'll find a summary of this tour.

The rental bike is rented without a bike computer/mount, mudguard, lights, carrier, lock, saddle bag, spare tube, pump, tire levers, etc. We recommend that you bring the desired equipment yourself.

Pedal systems

The following pedal systems are available:

Cannondale: SPD combi pedals, flat pedals

The pedals are included in the rental price. You can also bring your own pedals.

Helmet

It is possible to rent a helmet in addition to the rental bike.

Range (E-Bike)

The range for a single battery charge can vary greatly. It depends on many factors, the most important of which are: weight of the rider, load, air resistance, tire pressure and profile, terrain and elevation profile, road or trail conditions, outside temperature, maintenance of the e-bike, and the condition of the battery.

As a guideline, you can calculate with the following ranges:
  • Extreme conditions: 50 km (steep inclines, maximum support)
  • Good conditions: 110 km (flat, medium support)
  • Optimal conditions: 180 km (flat to slightly downhill, minimal support)

You need to plan around 5 - 6 hours to fully charge the empty battery.

Handover

You will receive your rental bicycle at the tour start. If you have booked a pre-night (if available for the specific tour), you can receive your bicycle already in the evening prior to the tour start.

You must return your bicycle at tour end just after arriving at the final destination (according tour schedule). Please consider that there are no possibilities to extend the rental period.

You don't have to take care or book any bicycle transportation for your rental bicycle.

Purchase after the tour

It is possible to buy your rental bicycle after the tour. If you are interested, please contact the tour guide on site in good time to receive an individual offer.

Frame size

During registration, we will ask for the GIANT bikes for your body height in cm. According those measurements, we'll assign the right frame size and will adjust the bicycle accordantly.

For the CANNONDALE bikes, you can choose the bicycle frame size yourself.

You can find help with determining the size of rental bikes here: Sizing Rentalbicycles.

Teams

Each GBI participant cycles in a team, guided by an experienced teamleader. Teamsize is limited to ten riders.

Cynthia Kipper
Track 2 (22 km/h)
Languages: German, English

We'll start right after breakfast at around 9 am. We stay together except climbs where everybody rides on her/his own until the top where we wait to each other. After a short break, each team member cycles downhill at her/his own speed and we then wait again until the team is complete before we continue cycling together the majority of the track.

The breaks during our tours are decided together by the team to ensure that everyone gets the rest they need to continue performing at their best.

Charity

The Global Biking Initiative (GBI) has its roots in charitable events and therefore always strives to combine time on the bike with fundraising activities. Every GBI tour offers a unique opportunity to combine cycling and social engagement.

Generally, you sign up for a GBI tour for your home or country of residence. Each of these GBI countries has a specific nonprofit organization defined for which you can fundraise.

Your personal GBI Country Champion can explain the exact details and processes for your respective country. If you have any questions, we are of course happy to help you at any time.

Minimum donation for this tour: 0 Euro (it is up to you whether you want to collect donations for the charity in your country or not)

Would you like to know how you can get friends, family and colleagues excited about your initiative? Here are some tried-and-true tips for attracting supporters:

Tell your story: Share your personal motivation and why you care about the nonprofit. Your passion will inspire others.

  • Use social media: Platforms like Facebook, Instagram and Twitter offer an effective way to spread your message. Share regular updates about your preparations and the progress of your fundraiser.
  • Create a donation website: Online donation platforms make it easy to receive and track donations. Link to your website on your social media and emails.
  • Organize events: Plan fundraising events, such as a flea market, a charity dinner or a fundraiser. Such events bring people together and promote engagement.
  • Direct approach: Speak to friends, family and colleagues personally and explain to them how they can help. Sometimes face-to-face conversations are the most effective way to gain supporters.
  • Show gratitude: Show gratitude to your supporters, be it through personal messages, thank you cards or small gifts. People feel valued and are more likely to donate again.

We know from almost twenty years of experience that combining cycling and fundraising can be an extremely fulfilling experience that not only benefits you, but those you help too!

Sponsors

Without the support of sponsors and partners, a GBI event would not be possible! Our heartfelt thanks go to those who made this event possible!
