General information

In 2022 we offer a transalp tour for ambitious cyclists with the Global Biking Initiative again. Within five cycling days we will pedal from Seefeld in Tyrol through the Dolomites and will end up in lovely Verona in Italy. The comfortable shuttle bus will bring us and our bikes back to Seefeld.

Tour highlights:
 - Experience Austrian hospitality in Tyrol
 - Climb the Brenner pass (as warm up)
 - Cross the sunny valleys of South Tyrol
 - Conquer epic Dolomites mountain passes

 - Enjoy dolce vita in Italy
 - Discover Verona and its ancient arena

On this tour, all participants have to overcome some major Alps passes, which have long climbs with very steep passages. The following long decents are very challenging, too. Actually this tour is only recommended for participants with alpine cycling experience!!

In general we choose routes on minor roads whenever possible. But especially the pass roads and valley roads are sometimes very busy and have sometimes no separate cycle paths.

All kinds of bikes are welcome, whether you have a road bike, mountainbike, touring bike or even an pedelec. Depending on the number of participants we will cycle in several (at least two) teams with different speed levels.

The Global Biking Initiative wants to show you the most interesting places in Europe the sportive way. We are proud of our international participants, that makes it easy for everybody to make new friends from other countries. Our main goal is the continuous support of charity projects worldwide. We achieve this by engaging the participants to raise funds, that support charity projects in their home countries.

Charity

As the GBI is a charity ride, you have to register for a GBI country (typically your home country) and raise funds in addition to the participation fee for the local supported charity in this country. The minimum donation for this event is 50 €. Each participant is kindly requested to raise more than the minimum donations to support our charity projects.

No clue how to raise funds?
Uncertain how and who to ask for donations?

Itinerary

Day 1: Seefeld (AT) - Ratschings (IT)
After a short tour briefing, the participants in the various teams head out onto the track. Behind Seefeld, we first predal up the Möserer saddle, before we rush down over 600 m into the Inn valley to Telfs. The Inntal cycle path now takes us to the center of Innsbruck. A short detour through the city allows a first photo and coffee stop before we pedal the first real Alpine pass of the tour, the Brenner Pass. As soon as we have left the city, we start the challenging ascent of approx. 1000 m elevation. Behind the bobsleigh track we will follow the mountain flanks with constant ups and downs. At Matrei we meet the old Brenner road and ride now with a moderate ascent over 17 km to the Brenner Pass at 1374 m altitude. On the descent from the Brenner we reach Sterzing with its beautiful old town on a well-prepared cycle path. From here it is only a short but challenging stretch up to our hotel in the middle of an idyllic mountain valley.
Track 1 & 2 follow the same route today.

Day 2: Ratschings (IT) - St. Vigil (IT)
After breakfast we let it roll comfortably to the Isarco Valley. We follow the Isarco downstream to the beginning of the Pustertal, which we reach near Aicha. On the Pustertal cycle path we reach Bruneck. This beautiful town is ideal for a longer lunch stop. Along the mountain slopes we cycle around the Kronplatz on minor roads and after a short descent we reach our stage destination in St. Vigil.
Track 2 follows the Isarco Valley via Brixen to just before Chiusa. Here we turn east into the mountains. At St. Peter we turn onto the street to Würzjoch (Passo delle Erbe), which is quite narrow (!) and has multiple sections of very bad asphalt. Today's highlight is the crossing of the Würzjoch (1987 m) with a climb of 25 km. Via St. Martin in Thurn we head towards St. Vigil.

Day 3: St. Vigil (IT) - Cortina d'Ampezzo (IT)
Today we pedal through the Val Badia (unfortunately) on the main road to the south. For a total of almost 30 kilometers we steadily uphill finally to the Campolongo Pass, the lowest of the four passes of the Sella Ronda. After the descent we reach Arraba, which is a good place to take a break to gather strength for the second part of the day. We now climb up to the Falzarego Pass at 2105 m and after a long descent we reach today's stage destination shortly before Cortina d'Ampezzo.
For Track 2, today is the king's stage. Behind Corvara we start the 3/4 circumnavigation of the Sella Ronda and cross the Grödnerjoch (2121 m), the Sella Joch (2244 m) and finally the Passo Pordoi (2239 m), before we join track 1 again in Arraba. Almost 3000 meters of altitude will have to be mastered on this day!

Day 4: Cortina d'Ampezzo (IT) - Cavaso del Tomba (IT)
There are no mountains to tackle today, but the altitude difference is still in the small four-digit range, as we have to overcome numerous smaller hills. We start riding down into the valley to Cortina d'Ampezzo, before we ride for a long time on a railway bike route of the former Dolomite railway in the Cadore valley to Belluno. Along the mountain slopes of the southern Dolomites, we now head to our destination for the day, which is already outside the mountains. Since we mostly cycle down the valley, the only challenge today is the distance.
Track 1 & 2 follow the same route today.

Day 5: Cavaso del Tomba (IT) - Verona (IT)
The last day of cycling is not quite as challenging compared to the past few days. At the beginning we ride off the main road a little in the hills before we reach Bassano del Grappa. Halfway through the day we reach Vicenza with a beautiful city center that invites us to take a detour and have a lunch break. Now we head directly towards Verona. Unfortunately, we also have to pedal on some long, monotonous and busy main roads, which we leave in between whenever possible to get off the beaten track. The imposing arena and perhaps the house of Romeo and Juliet will certainly serve as a photo stop before heading to our final tour destination outside the city.
For track 2 there is another highlight today. At Bassano del Grappa we turn one last time into the mountains. Over 20 km there is another 1500 m difference in altitude to overcome up to the summit of Monte Grappa.

Day 6: Verona (IT) - Seefeld (AT)
After the breakfast the shuttle bus bring the participants back to the tour start location in Seefeld.
