Itinerary
Day 1: Aix - Manosque
We travel through the city via the bustling Cours Mirabeau, taking a break amidst its lively cafes before tackling the first challenging ascent of the tour towards Rognes (Track 1) or Saint-Marc-Jaumegarde (Track 2).
After this climb, we enjoy a descent into the picturesque Durance Valley and continue towards the historic town of Villelaure. Here, another extended climb awaits, leading us through scenic vineyards to Cabrières-d’Aigues on the edge of the Grand Luberon.
To conclude the day’s journey, we follow a route that takes us through the mountains and parallel to the banks of the Durance River. This path guides us via La Bastide-des-Jourdans and Pierrevert, each village adding its unique character to our adventure. Finally, we reach our destination in Manosque, arriving as the setting sun casts a warm glow over the town, creating a perfect end to a day filled with varied landscapes and memorable experiences.
Day 2: Manosque - Sault
We begin by loosely tracing the Luberon cycling route, winding through picturesque villages and idyllic landscapes until we arrive in the charming town of Apt. Track 2 makes an extensive detour over the local ridge. Our adventure then unfolds as we head to the enchanting village of Roussillon, celebrated for its lively ochre quarries that paint the landscape in hues of red and gold. The vibrant colors and unique geology of Roussillon make it a captivating stop on our route.
From Roussillon, we tackle a challenging ascent, climbing about 700 meters to reach the Plateau d’Albion. This climb rewards us with stunning panoramic views of the surrounding countryside and a sense of accomplishment. On our way to our overnight stop in Sault, we pass through fields of lavender and picturesque Provençal scenery, each pedal stroke bringing us closer to the heart of this beautiful region.
Sault, nestled at the foot of Mont Ventoux, offers us a tranquil retreat where we can rest and prepare for the adventures of the next day.
Day 3: Sault - (Mont Ventoux) - Avignon
The queen stage is here! Early in the day, we conquer Mont Ventoux (1,898 m), undoubtedly the local landmark of the area!
For those finding the ascent of Mont Ventoux too challenging, Track 1 offers a scenic alternative: riding from Sault through the equally stunning Nesque Valley. This route takes us past the cave Bau de l’Aubesier, the oldest known site of early Neanderthals in France, adding a touch of historical intrigue to our journey.
As we cycle through the picturesque valley, we’ll pass the charming villages of Malemort-du-Comtat and Pernes-les-Fontaines. Both towns provide excellent opportunities for coffee breaks and lunch, where we can relax and soak in the local ambiance.
The highlight of the day is the historic city of Avignon, renowned for its rich papal history. Here, we can explore the beautiful old town, wander through its quaint streets, and marvel at the iconic Pont d’Avignon bridge.
Day 4: Avignon - Martigues
Today's route is almost entirely flat, promising a relaxing and enjoyable ride. We start by following the scenic Rhône River, its gentle flow guiding us towards the historic town of Arles (Track 1 takes a short break here for sightseeing and a coffee stop to explore the town’s rich Roman heritage and charming streets; Track 2 turns northeast before Arles to visit Saint-Rémy-de-Provence).
Our route then takes us to the inland lake Étang de Berre, where we can pause to admire the tranquil waters and the natural beauty of the surrounding area.
After passing through the town of Istres, we make our way to the vibrant port city of Martigues. Known as the “Venice of Provence,” Martigues welcomes us with its historic city center, L’Isle, crisscrossed by picturesque canals. As the day draws to a close, we gather for an evening beer at one of the charming cafes, reflecting on a day filled with scenic views and relaxed cycling.
Day 5: Martigues - Aix
We ride eastward along the Mediterranean Sea and the scenic Étang de Berre lake, enjoying some leisurely ascents that add a pleasant challenge to our otherwise relaxed journey. Along the way, we pass through typical Camargue-style holiday resorts, their rustic charm adding to the day’s allure.
After a few hours on the road, Marseille’s airport comes into view, signaling that our adventure is nearing its end. This final stretch offers one last opportunity to savor the picturesque landscapes, charming villages, and the varied route that has led us through the untouched beauty of Provençal nature.
We arrive at our starting hotel, completing our well-deserved journey with a sense of accomplishment and fulfillment.
