This guided cycling holiday will lead us to some of the most interesting spots in the Provence. We will discover Marseille, the starting point of this tour, as well as the hilly backland of this region. Many different villages with their Provençal flair will enchant you. And the scenery on our way is phantastic. The highlight for all ambitious cyclists will be for sure the Mont Ventoux, but you can also shortcut this climb. Finally we will return after four unforgettable days to Marseille.

The Provence is a very hilly area, you should be aware of constant and partially longlasting ups and downs. We have designed this tour to see as many highlights as possible on our route in order to give you a good impression of the beauty of this place. And don't forget to try the typical Provençal cuisine and the local wines and let us show you some nice venues for the night.

All different kinds of bikes are welcome, whether you have a road bike, mountainbike, city bike or even an eBike. Depending on the number of participants we will cycle in several (at least two) teams with different speed levels.

The Global Biking Initiative (GBI) wants to show you the most interesting places in Europe in a sportive way. We are proud of our international participants, that makes it easy for everybody to make new friends from other countries. One of our main goals is the continuous support of charity projects worldwide. We achieve this by engaging the participants to raise funds for a charity project in their home country.

Charity

As the GBI is a charity ride, you have to register for a GBI country (typically your home country) and raise funds in addition to the participation fee for the local supported charity in this country. The minimum donation for this event is 50 €. Each participant is kindly requested to raise more than the minimum donations to support our charity projects.

No clue how to raise funds?

Tour description

Day 1: Marseille - Manosque
We will leave the center of Marseille to the north. Right after leaving the wider area of Marseille you will get a taste of what you can expect the next days. We cycle on minor streets and reach the city of Aix-en-Provence after appr. 30 km. At the Cours Mirabeau many cafes lure for a coffee and a short rest. Later on we reach the Durance valley and the city of Pertuis, where the next climb to Bastide-des-Jourdans at the edge of the Grand Luberon is waiting for us. The last part of the day brings us to Manosque at the Durance.
Track 2 detours in Aix-en-Provence to the east and crosses the Durance at Mirabeaux. Both tracks join again in La Tour d'Aigues.

Day 2: Manosque - Sault
At the beginning of day 2 we follow a cycling route to Apt, partially on a well paved old rail trail. From here we head towards Pont d'Julien and further to Roussillon, well known for its colourful ochre quarries. Now we have to climb for about 700 height meters to the Plateau d'Albion, where our destination Sault is located.
Track 2 detours from Apt to the beautiful mountain villages of Bonnieux and Lacost before reaching Pont Julien.

Day 3: Sault - St.-Remy-de-Provence
The queen's stage of this tour (track 2) leads us from Sault for 26 kilometers all the way up to the Mont Ventoux. The Géant de Provence is visible from far away and after uncountable, challenging hairpin curves we will reach the 'roof of the tour' at 1912 m with a magnificent panoramic view. Those, who want to avoid this climb, could cycle through the beautiful Gorge de la Nesque with many spectacular views (track 1).
The next highlight on this stage is Avignon, the ancient residence of the pope, with its old town, the popes palace and the famous Pont d'Avignon. From here we will cycle flat along the river Rhone and after a last hill further to our destination Saint Remy.

Day 4: St.-Remy-de-Provence - Marseille
Even the last day will show us the beauty of the Provencal hills. Right after the start we have to climb the Alpilles, a mountain range south of St. Remy. But the climb is worth the effort, as it will lead us to one of the most beautiful villages in France, Les-Beaux-de-Provence. Later we will reach the lake Étang de Berre and the airport of Marseille. Still a last climb and our tour finish in Marseille is in front of us.
