Tour overview

In 2025, this unique cycling tour with several hundred participants from all over the world will take us from Venice in Italy to the heart of Slowenia. Further we cross the austrian Alps in Carinthia and Styria and finally end up in the Mozart city of Salzburg.

On this tour we offer a wide range of services to offer participants a very special experience. Even cyclists with little training can master the routes well as a team. And if a stage cannot be completed, our pickup team is ready and will take you to your destination for the day in a relaxed manner.

The mixture of different languages, nationalities and cultures creates the unique GBI spirit. And even rookies will perceive this spirit not later than the second day.

The Global Biking Initiative wants to show you the most interesting places in Europe the sportive way. We are proud of our international participants, that makes it easy for everybody to make new friends from other countries. Our main goal is the continuous support of charity projects worldwide. We achieve this by engaging the participants to raise funds, that support charity projects in their home countries.

Would you like to know how you can get friends, family and colleagues excited about your initiative? Here are some tried-and-true tips for attracting supporters:

Tell your story: Share your personal motivation and why you care about the nonprofit. Your passion will inspire others.

  • Use social media: Platforms like Facebook, Instagram and Twitter offer an effective way to spread your message. Share regular updates about your preparations and the progress of your fundraiser.
  • Create a donation website: Online donation platforms make it easy to receive and track donations. Link to your website on your social media and emails.
  • Organize events: Plan fundraising events, such as a flea market, a charity dinner or a fundraiser. Such events bring people together and promote engagement.
  • Direct approach: Speak to friends, family and colleagues personally and explain to them how they can help. Sometimes face-to-face conversations are the most effective way to gain supporters.
  • Show gratitude: Show gratitude to your supporters, be it through personal messages, thank you cards or small gifts. People feel valued and are more likely to donate again.

We know from almost twenty years of experience that combining cycling and fundraising can be an extremely fulfilling experience that not only benefits you, but those you help too!

Tour description

We are currently working hard on route planning. However, not all stage locations have been finally confirmed, so the route and route descriptions may still change in the next few weeks. It is therefore advisable to check this page regularly in order to always know the latest status of the route.

Itinerary

Day 1: Venice (IT) to Pordenone (IT)
After the teams have met at the tour start location in Venice and the official opening ceremony by tour director Michael Leuenberger has ended, all teams are gradually set off on the route. First we have to wind our way through Venice's city traffic before we reach less busy areas in the north of the city. We are now cycling through the flat plains of the Veneto, which are criss-crossed with many small rivers, and which shouldn't be challenging at all. At the end of the stage we reach the town of Pordenone, where we can see the Dolomites in the distance.
Track 2 bypasses the city of Oderzo widely and joins track 1 in Pordenone.
Route character: flat (track 1 & 2)

Day 2: Pordenone (IT) to Šempeter pri Gorici (SLO)
There's another flat stage today. We head east through the Friuli-Venezia Giulia region. At first we only pass smaller villages. After about 2/3 of the stage we reach the city of Palmanova, which is special due to its star-shaped floor plan and is certainly worth a stopover. Today's destination is on the border with Slovenia.
Today Track 2 will detour twice from the regular track. In the first half of the stage we are following the river Tagliamento for a while and rejoin at Bertiolo. Behind Palmanova will will again leave the track1 and cross the Slovenian border further south. Already 15 km before we reach the border the hills are present which will rise up to 400 m and give us a taste of the coming days. In this area it will be hard to find a place for a coffee stop, so you should plan this rather in on the italian side.
Route character: flat (track 1), hilly (track 2)

Day 3: Šempeter pri Gorici (SLO) to Kranj (SLO)
We are cycling flat through the Primorska region. At Ajdovščina we leave the valley and tackle the first real mountain of the tour. The route takes us up to 876 m to the Hrušica Pass. After this climb has been mastered, we descent swiftly and then mainly flat to our destination in the center of Ljubljana, the lively capital of Slovenia.
At Logatec the track will split and track 2 will head towards Cerknica close to the largest (seasonal) lake in Slovenia. We have to climb three hills before we reach Kranj from the south.
Route character: very hilly (track 1), mountainous (track 2)

Day 4: Kranj (SLO) to Klagenfurt (AT)
Today the participants are cycling deep into the Alps for the first time. We continue, always with a minimal gradient, to Preddvor. The highlight of the day is most likely the Seebergsattel at 1200 m with over 25 km of ascent. However, the gradients along the route are not really scary. But we should expect more incline in the last few kilometers before the top of the pass. The pass also marks the transition into the Austrian state of Carinthia. Now we take a long descent down to Bad Eisenkappel and continue to Klagenfurt with only minor hills, where we will spend the night in a large ice rink.
At Bad Eisenkappel track 2 detours to the west and climbs on minor streets the Schaidasattel and later the Užnik, always accompanied by magnificent views to the summits of the Karavankas mountain range.
Route character: very hilly (track 1), mountainous (track 2)

Day 5: Klagenfurt (AT) to St. Peter am Kammerberg (AT)
From todays start, we head in a northerly direction to St. Veit an der Glan. On slightly hilly terrain we continue to Altendorf and the beautiful castle town of Friesach. A short time later we are already in the Austrian federal state of Styria. Further uphill the route leads us to Neumarkt and we climb the Neumarkter Sattel on a minor road. Now we descent to Teufenbach and reach the Mur valley. At Katsch an der mur we turn into a side valley and now it is not far to our destination for the day in the small town of St. Peter, which is very idyllic and surrounded by lovely nature.
At Altenhofen track 2 turn west and climbs the Gunzenberg mountain pass with 7,3% average incline on 5,4 km. The short and crisp descent to Straßburg is followed by another climb to the Prekova pass, situated in the lovely Gurktaler Alps. Another descent and the next challenge is waiting for us, the Grattinger Sattel, which is not that scenic compared with the previous passes. A last time we need to climb to the much lower Talbacher Sattel and at Teufenbach we finally meet track 1 again.
Route character: hilly (track 1), mountainous (track 2)

Day 6: St. Peter am Kammerberg (AT) to Ramsau (AT)
Probably the most strenuous day for track 1 lies ahead of us today. Immediately after starting in the morning we head up into the Niedere Tauern mountain range. On the 13 km long journey to Sölkpass on a country road with little traffic, very challenging gradients of at times well over 10% can be expected, especially at the beginning and in the last third. But the torture is rewarded with frequent views of great landscapes. After the descent from the Sölkpass we reach the Enns valley, where we pedal on the valley cycling path for quite a while. The well-known ski resort Schladming is worth for a short stop before we climb another hill, that lies between us and the stage destination.
Track 2 holds only a minor detour today. We cycle a different route in the Enns valley than track 1 until Ramsau.
Route character: mountainous (track 1 & 2)

Day 7: Ramsau (AT) to Salzburg (AT)
The last stage is perfect for ending the tour. After six interesting and challenging stages, there are no more mountains to climb today. However, there are still a few hills ahead of us on the way to the tour destination. First we pedal through the Pongau area. At Bischofshofen we meet the Salzach river, which we will follow for the rest of the day. We follow the European cycle path Eurovelo EV7, which runs mostly directly beneath the river. Nice cities like Werfen, with a beautiful castle high above the city, and Hallein are on our route and worth to stop for a while. We reach the Mozart city of Salzburg from the south and soon reach our final tour destination, that is located very close to the city center.
At Golling the track 2 will detour for a last time into the mountains, to be more precise, to the Tennengebirge east of the Salzach river. We climb up to 800 m before meeting track 1 again at Hallein.
After the welcome ceremony and handing over the donation check, all participants now head home individually.
Route character: wavy (track 1), hilly (track 2)

Rental Coverage

The rental price includes the following equipment/rental services: Charging cable (e-bike only), bike cleaning.

The rental bike is rented without a bike computer/mount, mudguard, lights, carrier, lock, saddle bag, spare tube, pump, tire levers, etc. We recommend that you bring the desired equipment yourself.

Pedal systems

The following pedal systems are available:

Cannondale: SPD combi pedals, flat pedals

Giant: own pedals only! Due to the high number of rental bicycles for this event, we can't provide individual pedals.

Bottle holder

All road bikes are equipped with two bottle holder (on the S models, only one bottle holder can be mounted). The e-bikes are equipped with one bottle holder.

Helmet

It is possible to rent a helmet in addition to the rental bike.

Range (E-Bike)

The range for a single battery charge can vary greatly. It depends on many factors, the most important of which are: weight of the rider, load, air resistance, tire pressure and profile, terrain and elevation profile, road or trail conditions, outside temperature, maintenance of the e-bike, and the condition of the battery.

As a guideline, you can calculate with the following ranges:
  • Extreme conditions: 50 km (steep inclines, maximum support)
  • Good conditions: 110 km (flat, medium support)
  • Optimal conditions: 180 km (flat to slightly downhill, minimal support)

You need to plan around 5 - 6 hours to fully charge the empty battery.

Handover

You will receive your rental bicycle at the tour start. If you have booked a pre-night (if available for the specific tour), you can receive your bicycle already in the evening prior to the tour start.

You must return your bicycle at tour end just after arriving at the final destination (according tour schedule). Please consider that there are no possibilities to extend the rental period.

You don't have to take care or book any bicycle transportation for your rental bicycle.

Purchase after the tour

It is possible to buy your rental bicycle after the tour. If you are interested, please contact the tour guide on site in good time to receive an individual offer.

Frame size

During registration, we will ask for the GIANT bikes for your body height in cm. According those measurements, we'll assign the right frame size and will adjust the bicycle accordantly.

For the CANNONDALE bikes, you can choose the bicycle frame size yourself.

You can find help with determining the size of rental bikes here: Sizing Rentalbicycles.
