General information

Tour overview

This unique cycling tour with up to 400 participants from all over the world will lead us from the Dutch flower capital of Amsterdam through the BeNeLux countries to the banking metropolis of Frankfurt. We will start cycling through the flat but windy Netherlands. When we reach the southern parts of the Netherlands, it will get more and more hilly. We cross Belgium and Luxembourg with the Ardennes and then reach the Moselle valley. From here only the Hunsrueck and Eifel heights will challenge us before we reach Frankfurt, where we will celebrate a week full of joy, sports and companionship.

On our tours we offer a broad range of services to provide you a very special experience. Even not well trained cyclists could manage to ride the daily distances. And if you really need to finish a stage earlier, our pickup service will bring you and your bike to the daily destination.

The mixture of different languages, nationalities and cultures creates the unique GBI spirit. And even rookies will perceive this spirit not later than the second day.

Are you ready for this challenge? We cycle for charity!

Itinerary

Day 1: Düsseldorf (D) - Siegburg (D)
After the participants have met their teams and the tour director officially started the tour, every team hit the road. Almost the whole day we will cycle flat and along the beautiful river Rhine southwards. We cycle through the meadow landscapes at the Rhine and pass large cities like Düsseldorf and Cologne. The medieval customs fortress of Zons as well as the view of the Kölner Dom from the other river side might be some of the highlights of the day. After leaving Cologne we say goodbye to the Rhine and at the Wahner Heide we will face the only, not really challenging climb before we reach Siegburg with its prominent hilltop abbey in the city.
Route character: mostly flat

Day 2: Siegburg (D) - Roermond (NL)
We start the day by heading towards the river Rhine again. Here we take a ferry to Wesseling and reach the city of Brühl soon. From now on we are cycling throught the wavy area of the Cologne Lowland (Kölner Bucht) with many brown coal mining areas. At the end of the stage we will cross an extensive forestal area at the Dutch border, passing the former Royal Air Force base.
Route character: slightly wavy

Day 3: Roermond (NL) - Monschau (D)
To be on the safe side, everyone should have their passports with them today, as we cross the borders between the Netherlands, Germany and Belgium several times. Today it will get much more hilly than the previous days. Starting flat while crossing the German border at around 20 kilometers it gets significantly wavier with some first climbs. We pass Aachen in the west and come to the first 'highlight', the Vaals mountain, also known as the tri-border point, where Belgium, the Netherlands and Germany meet at the summit. Now we are on the Belgian side and ride for the rest of the stage on the stunning Vennbahn cycle path to the picturesque Eifel town of Monschau.
Some monuments of the spring classics are on the agenda for track 2 today. First we climb the most famous ascent in the Netherlands, the Cauberg at Valkenburg, which is the traditional destination of the Amstel Gold race. We reach very soon the Gulperberg, also well known to cyclists from the Amstel Gold Race. At the Vaals mountain, the highest mountain of the Netherlands, we join the regular track 1.
Route character: hilly terrain with a very long ascent at the end of the stage.

Day 4: Monschau (D) - Bitburg (D)
Today there are no separate tracks, everyone pedals the same route through the breathtaking Eifel region, which is peppered with several challenging climbs and descents. Later we cycle easily on the Prüm bike path along the river and cross the lovely village of Prüm. After leaving the bike path there is only one more challenging climb on our way to our destination of the day. The Bitburg sports school on the site of a former US airbase hosts us for that night. We can set up our camp on the extensive grounds and take care of your physical well-being in the connected sports hotel, where all participants spend the night.
Route character: very hilly terrain with several ascents and descents, but also a slightly descending part at the river.

Day 5: Bitburg (D) - Nohfelden (D)
After breakfast we tackle the last hills of the Eifel easily before we descent into the Moselle valley with its countless vineyards. The most difficult part of the stage with a very challenging climb is waiting for us as soon as we leave the Moselle after some kilometers. From the valley there are 350 meters of climb within the next 7 km to get on top of the Hunsrück hills. After we made it, the following wavy Hunsrück hills are much less challenging until we reach our destination.
Track 2 leads right from the start in a wide loop to Echternach in Luxembourg. We follow the river Sauer along the border and continue to Trier on the Moselle, which we follow to the junction with track 1.
Route character: very hilly terrain with some challenging climbs, but also flat river valley sections.

Day 6: Nohfelden (D) - Bad Kreuznach (D)
In the beginning of the day we pedal over the Hunsrück hills with some ups and downs. After 25 km we reach the village of Kronweiler and from here we follow the river Nahe for the rest of the day with steady descent until we reach the stage destination in Gensingen.
Track 2 is heading for the queens stage today, at least regarding the distance, but also the climb is very challenging.
Route character: At the beginning a few hills, then mostly downriver (Track1). Very hilly at the beginning, later mostly downriver (Track 2).

Day 7: Bad Kreuznach (D) - Frankfurt am Main (D)
The last day starts with a cozy roll-in phase along the river Nahe to Bingen. We follow the river Rhine on the south bank to Mainz. We have a good view to the other side of the river where we can see many vineyards and picturesque towns such as Ruedesheim or Eltville. At Mainz we cross the Rhine and reach the river Main immediately, which we follow to the final tour destination.
Whereas track 1 is cycling flat today, track 2 detours into the hilly backcountry of Rhinehessen with one challenging climb before we cross the river at Mainz and join track 1.
After the official farewell ceremony, the cyclists will scatter in all directions, hoping to pedal together again for the good cause next year.
Route character: slightly hilly along the Nahe, Rhine & Main rivers (Track 1 & 2), hilly in the hilly backcountry with a challenging ascent (Track 2).

Riding is one reason to live.
Last year, I enjoyed riding in the Alps, drank wine from a winery vineyard and drinking Weizen beer at a rural village festival to make happy memories with Korean team members.
This year, I want to make friends with other country riders and make good memories.
Our team will run mainly on 2 tracks, while enjoying the view of the surroundings, and we will visit some delicious restaurants.
After riding the flower road, sausages and beer will be together and expect friends to communicate.

I'm from South Korea and this is second time for GBI event. I really happy with the fact that I can communicate and help others through the cycling that I've been enjoying so far. Many thanks GBI! My team will run about 23km/h on flat road basis, not too fast and not too slow. And I think this will allow us to get enjoyable short stops during daily cycling. For example of short stops, coffee breaks, taking pictures and interacting with the locals. We're going to start and arrive together. However, you can enjoy cycling according to your personal ability whenever we hit steep mountains and every team mates will gather at the top.

This sounds like a successful day!! Average speed is planned around 22km/h. After 2/3 of the daily stage we will have a lunch break for 45 – 60 minutes. We will stay together for the whole day, we leave no man behind. But when we drive steep mountain roads, we'll gather at the top. We always take care of each other. It would be nice to finish with te same team as we start. We will cycle on track 1 therefore race bikes are preferred.

Start late - arrive in time !

The fun of cycling in a team is the most important. One day we will may be fast, the other we will be more impressed by the landscape and good restaurants. For every tour day we agree, who is going to do track 1 or track 2 and we will split in 2 smaller Joint-Cyclers teams per day. Propbably there will be a preferences for track 2. Average speed can be between 20 - 30 km/h, depends on the daily condition :-). In the evening we offer to relax together, celebrating the highlights of the day, but will also look forward to the challenges of the next day.
